Week 20 in review: Infinix Note 12 VIP official, X80 Pro, Mate Xs 2 go global
DarcellC Another week down, let’s recap. Infinix unveiled the Note 12 VIP and it can do 120W Hyper Charge. Infinix claims the 4,500mAh battery has a 0-100% time of just 17 minutes. Otherwise, the Note 12 VIP has a 108MP camera, and a 6.7-inch 120Hz display. The Infinix Note 12 VIP will be available soon in select regions at $300.
The vivo X80 and X80 Pro began their global rollout in India. Both handsets offer 6.78-inch AMOLEDs, 50MP main cams, and 80W charging. The X80 Pro gets Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset as well as a more advanced 120Hz LTPO2 AMOLED display with QHD+ resolution. vivo X80 gets MediaTek’s Dimensity 9000 chipset and an FHD+ Samsung E5 AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate.
vivo X80 Pro comes in a single Cosmic Black color and a 12/256GB trim starting at INR 79,999. Reservations tip-off today while open sales begin on May 25. Buyers in Malaysia can also pre-order the X80 Pro for MYR 4,999. vivo X80 comes in Cosmic Black and Urban Blue colors. The 8/128GB trim will retail for INR 54,999 while the 12/256GB model will go for INR 59,999. The device is also on pre-order in Pakistan for PKR 159,999.
The Huawei Mate Xs 2 also went global. It’s set to arrive in European markets in June for €1,999 in white, black, and violet colors. The latest outward foldable from Huawei packs a 7.8-inch OLED with a 2480 x 2200px resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. When folded up the panel shrinks to a more one-hand friendly 6.5-inches. Despite the large size Mate Xs 2 weighs in at 255 grams – notably less than its predecessor – Mate Xs (300g) and Huawei’s Mate X2 (295g). The new Mate Xs 2 is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 4G chipset and comes in a single 8GB RAM and 512GB storage trim.
A rumor surfaced that Samsung will reportedly design its own custom chipset for the 2025 Galaxy S-series. The new rumor cited by South Korean publication Inews24 and reliable tipster IceUniverse suggests that Samsung officials are not pleased with the backlash over the Galaxy S22 series GOS scandal as well as the insufficient yields and poor thermal management of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and the Exynos 2200 chipsets. Thus a new approach similar to what Apple is doing with its A-series chipsets is being discussed with the ultimate goal of having better-optimized devices.
Samsung also issued a new firmware update to the Galaxy S22 line of devices. It includes various unnamed security fixes as well as improvements to the “overall stability of functions”.
