DJI first introduced its RC drone remote in conjunction with the Mini 3 Pro it released back in May. An upgrade from the RC-N1 controller, which requires a smartphone connection for first-person-view flying, the DJI RC remote will soon be compatible with the company’s Air 2S drone.

The DJI RC features a 5.5-inch FHD screen with adjustable brightness up to 700 nits and Weighs 390g (13.8oz). DJI’s O3+ transmission allows for a low-latency 1080p/60p live video fee at a range of up to 15km (9.3 miles). Buttons and dials can be customized for an optimal experience and the dual-spring control sticks allow for smoother flights and maneuvers.

DJI’s Air 2S model offers up a 20MP camera with a 1 Type (12.4 x 9.3mm) CMOS sensor along with the ability to capture up to 5.1K/30p footage. It isn’t a sub-250g drone like the Mini 3 Pro, but at 595g it’s still compact enough to carry around with a few extra batteries, each gives you up to 31 minutes flight time.

DJI’s Air 2S drone will soon be compatible with the RC remote. It boasts a 20MP camera with a 1″-type CMOS sensor on a compact, foldable frame.

DJI’s RC remote is compatible with the Mavic 3 series, as well, is practically half the weight of the DJI RC Pro (630g) and a fraction of the price. Retailing separately for $309, compared to the RC Pro’s $1,199 price tag, it feels like a steal. That being said, the more compact prosumer remote, that can operate up to 4 hours on a single battery charge, has one shortcoming – it only features DJI’s Fly app.

Anyone looking to use their drone for mapping or planning waypoint missions from any location won’t be able to upload any third-party apps such as Pix4D, DroneDeploy or Litchi. Still, for the Air 2S, the forthcoming DJI RC compatibility is good news for those who don’t want to use their smartphones to help control their drone. According to @DealsDrone, firmware updates to make this possible are expected in the near future.
